Perched among the dried palms of Samburu, a fluffed-up Grey-headed Kingfisher glows like a gem—its ochre and aquamarine plumage set ablaze by the sun, a vermillion bill completing its flamboyant display. Bold in both color and character, these striking birds are known for their sharp trilling call—t-t-t-t-t-t-t—and theatrical courtship rituals.

Native to East Africa, the insect-loving Kingfisher is largely resident, though a few venture south beyond the Zambezi. True to their name, they hunt with precision—diving swiftly to snatch prey before returning to a favored perch. In flight, they move low and fast, darting just above the treetops with unwavering purpose.
