In the expansive and rugged terrain of Samburu National Reserve, I am Shujaa, a Grevy’s Zebra, embarking on a majestic journey that takes me across this land with a blend of power and elegance that is uniquely my own. Nature, the ultimate artist, has painted my coat with a pattern that reflects my rarity and magnificence, with each stripe emerging as a masterpiece in itself.

The distinction of my “Mickey Mouse” ears is a badge of honor, marking me as an Imperial zebra, the largest and most endangered among my fellow zebras. But, with this distinctiveness comes a burden, one that has seen hunters hunker after me for my pelt, oblivious to the peril they pose to our kind.

Over the past three decades, the Grevy’s zebra population has faced a troubling decline of 54 percent. In a world where less than 1 percent of our habitat enjoys adequate protection, we, the endangered Grevy’s zebras, strive to thrive, our numbers dwindling to a mere 3,000 in the wild.
